Menard USA has become the first contractor in the United States to put Junttan’s new DR5 drilling rig into production, with the machine now supporting a rigid inclusion project in Philadelphia. Following its first weeks of operation, the team has been pleased with the rig’s overall performance, productivity, and operator-focused design.
According to Eddie McCauley, Superintendent at Menard, the DR5 has demonstrated several features that support safe operations, efficient mobilization, and consistent production in rigid inclusion applications.
The machine has been designed with operator usability, safety, and efficient jobsite logistics in mind — features that make a real difference in demanding foundation projects.
“The DR5 has proven to be a very well-thought-out drilling platform, particularly for rigid inclusion work where production, safety, and mobilization efficiency directly impact the project.”
The DR5 is currently being utilized on a rigid inclusion project in the Philadelphia area, supporting Menard’s ground improvement solution designed to improve soil performance and meet the project’s foundation requirements.
Operators have quickly appreciated the modern cab, excellent visibility, and intuitive control system. Combined with Menard’s digital platform, the DR5 enables operators and project teams to monitor drilling parameters in real time, helping support quality control and installation consistency throughout the project.
Safety and ease of setup have been another highlight. McCauley praised the DR5’s remote setup capability, which allows the machine to be positioned and erected while maintaining direct visual contact with the mast and surrounding personnel, improving both safety and efficiency on site.
From a production perspective, the DR5 has delivered the strong torque and smooth drilling performance required for demanding rigid inclusion applications. At the same time, its transport-friendly design has simplified mobilization between projects, reducing assembly time and helping contractors return to production more quickly.
Overall, McCauley’s first experience with the DR5 has been highly positive.
“The productivity, operator comfort, and ease of mobilization have all contributed to a very positive experience. We remain satisfied with the machine’s overall performance on the jobsite.”
As the first DR5 operating in the United States, this project represents an important milestone for both Junttan and Menard. The collaboration demonstrates how advanced drilling technology, combined with experienced project teams and proven ground improvement expertise, can contribute to safe, productive, and efficient project delivery.
