Roger Bullivant and Junttan PMx2e Drive a New Era of Sustainable Piling in the UK

Junttan’s fully battery-powered pile driving rig, the PMx2e, has been at the heart of another milestone in sustainable foundation construction in the UK.

Roger Bullivant Limited (RBL) made history by trialling the UK’s first electric pile driving rig, the Junttan PMx2e, at the Ardrossan Community Campus in North Ayrshire – a flagship educational development led by Morgan Sindall Construction. Powered by a 392 kWh high-voltage battery system, the PMx2e produces zero local CO₂ emissions, operates with minimal noise, and delivers a full day of productivity using its replaceable battery packs.

At Ardrossan, RBL installed 581 driven steel tubular piles in challenging ground conditions, achieving substantial carbon savings through the use of repurposed steel and electric site logistics. The project demonstrated how the PMx2e combines power, efficiency, and sustainability, setting a new standard for the UK piling industry.

Building on this success, RBL recently used the Junttan PMx2e to install very low-carbon, precast concrete piles at Statera Energy’s Thurrock Flexible Generation site, supporting the development of a Gas Peaker facility and a 275kV substation. The piles were installed to depths of up to 30 metres, and this latest phase builds on a successful earlier programme of works delivered by RBL on the same site.

Commenting on the last project, Richard Taylor, Operations Director at RBL, said, “By combining very low carbon precast concrete with electric rig technology, we’re not only reducing emissions but also setting new standards towards sustainable delivery in the infrastructure sector.”
