Brady Marine & Civil led the marine works for one of Western Australia’s most iconic infrastructure upgrades in Perth: the Swan River Crossings Project. Led by Main Roads WA, the initiative aimed to replace the aging Fremantle Traffic Bridge, enhancing transport safety, pedestrian and cyclist connectivity, and marine navigability for decades to come. Scheduled between 2024 and 2026, the project stands out for its complexity. It has to reconcile multiple requirements: road and freight access, safe river navigation, environmental and heritage protection, and uninterrupted community access. A key challenge is constructing parts of the new structure while the existing bridge remains fully operational. Brady Marine & Civil, one of Australia’s leading marine infrastructure specialists since 2010 and part of Soletanche Bachy (Vinci Group), delivered both the temporary marine works and permanent bridge foundations, forming the backbone of the new crossing.

Junttan Power at the Core of the Operation
At the heart of Brady’s piling operations were three Junttan hydraulic hammers, two HHx350s and one HHx300, chosen for their proven drivability, strength, and reliability in harsh marine conditions. “We had a range of pile diameters, 1m and 1.5m, and long driving depths of up to 60 meters into tough ground. We needed a robust hammer that could handle that. The HHx350 was the right choice,” states Tecwyn Griffiths, Project Manager, Brady Marine & Civil.

The hammers were used to drive both temporary jetty foundations and permanent piles. The temporary jetties built on both riverbanks served as critical platforms for sequential pile driving works. “We were driving each pile for three to four hours. After six months, we experienced zero breakdowns. That was huge for our schedule and costs,” says Tecwyn Griffiths.

Efficient and Operator-Friendly
For Brady’s on-site crews, the Junttan hammers provided both power and usability. “These hammers were very easy to use from setup to day-to-day operations. The remote controls were intuitive and easy to train on, making the whole system efficient for our teams on site,” notes Freddy Nugier, Senior Project Manager for Brady Marine & Civil. The combination of fast operator onboarding, consistent energy transfer, and adjustable drop heights gave Brady the flexibility needed to manage complex marine conditions efficiently.

Collaborative Engineering and Trusted Support
Junttan’s support extended far beyond supplying equipment. Junttan team provided early-stage drivability assessments, geotechnical consultation, and responsive support, ensuring confidence in execution from design through delivery.
