Junttan Multipurpose Piling Rigs in use by Keller at Beam Reach, Dagenham, UK

Keller earlier this year was contracted by Readie Construction to install displacement piles for four industrial units which are being built in Dagenham, UK, on the site of a former Ford car factory. For this project, they chose Keller’s solution of two different types of bored piles – DCIS and CFA and an enlarged head – as a means of minimizing spoil generation.

For the piling Keller was using two of their Junttan PM26LC multipurpose piling rigs, which are able to install driven as well as different types of bored piles. Also, one of Keller’s Junttan PM25 piling rig was used.

Three units were piled using DCIS but one of the four units had a complication. It was located adjacent to the HS1 rail line and a medium pressure gas main. It was decided to adopt a CFA piling technique in this area to minimize vibration and no disruption was caused to train services.

For the floor slab, Keller offered a 900mm diameter enlarged head. One of the major advantages of this is that Keller float finish them to a precise level tolerance, which means there is no intermediate work between the head casting and laying the slab. Heads were placed at +0/-25mm with the levelling controlled by Keller. This is a major advantage in piled floors as the number of piles can be large.

Overall, more than 1000 piles at 380 and 430mm diameter were installed during the project, carrying loads of up to 700kN.

The piling project began in February 2017 and ended in April 2017.
